The journey of your book with us
Every project follows a proven six-step workflow that keeps you informed and in control throughout.
Initial consultation and manuscript review
Your journey begins with a free, no-obligation consultation. You can reach us by phone, email, or through the contact form on our home page. During this conversation, we learn about your book — its genre, target audience, current state, and your goals for publication. We ask you to submit a sample of your manuscript (typically the first 5,000 words or two chapters) so we can assess the level of editing required.
Within three business days of receiving your sample, we provide a detailed assessment memo that outlines what we observed, which editing tier we recommend, and a transparent cost estimate. There is absolutely no pressure to proceed — this step is about giving you the information you need to make a confident decision.
Proposal, agreement, and editor matching
If you decide to move forward, we prepare a formal service agreement that specifies the scope of work, timeline, deliverables, and total cost. Once you approve and submit the initial payment (typically 50% upfront), we match your manuscript with the editor best suited to your genre and style.
Editor matching is something we take seriously. A romance novel requires a different editorial sensibility than a business strategy book, and our team includes specialists across fiction, non-fiction, memoir, academic writing, and children's literature. You will receive a brief bio of your assigned editor, and you are welcome to request a different match if you have a preference.
Deep reading and editorial analysis
Before making a single mark on your manuscript, your editor reads the entire work from cover to cover. This complete read-through allows them to understand the book holistically — its themes, voice, pacing, and structure — before diving into detailed feedback. Many editing services skip this step to save time, but we believe it is essential for producing coherent, manuscript-wide recommendations rather than isolated, sometimes contradictory notes.
During this phase, your editor also creates a working style sheet for your book, noting character names, place names, timeline details, and any recurring stylistic patterns. This document becomes a reference tool that ensures consistency throughout the editing process.
Editing and detailed feedback
This is where the core editorial work happens. Depending on the service you selected, your editor will provide developmental notes (structural and narrative feedback), copy edits (grammar, punctuation, style consistency), or both. All changes are made using tracked changes in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and explanatory comments accompany significant suggestions so you understand the reasoning behind each one.
For developmental editing, you will also receive an editorial letter — a multi-page document that summarises the big-picture observations, highlights the manuscript's greatest strengths, and provides actionable recommendations for revision. This letter serves as a roadmap for your next draft and is one of the most valued deliverables our clients receive.
Author review and revision support
Once the edited manuscript and editorial letter are delivered, you have time to review every change and comment at your own pace. We encourage you to accept, reject, or modify suggestions as you see fit — the book is yours, and the final creative decisions always rest with you.
Our standard package includes one round of follow-up support. After you have worked through the edits and made your revisions, you can resubmit the manuscript for a clean-up review. Your editor will verify that revisions are consistent, check for any new issues introduced during rewriting, and confirm that the style sheet is up to date. If you need additional revision rounds, we offer them at a reduced per-word rate.
Final delivery and next steps
After the follow-up review, you receive your final, polished manuscript along with the completed style sheet and any supplementary documents (such as a query letter draft, if you opted for publishing consultation). We also provide a brief summary of recommended next steps tailored to your publishing path — whether that means submitting to agents, uploading to a self-publishing platform, or engaging a cover designer and typesetter.
Our relationship does not end at delivery. We remain available for questions, referrals to trusted industry professionals, and future projects. Many of our authors return to us for subsequent books, and we offer a loyalty discount for repeat clients.
